Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce functioning of computer networks, their architecture and security. Emphasis is focused on the applicability of knowledge in practice.
|
Requirements on student
|
Credits: Individually accomplished work, passing credit exam. The semestral work has to be delivered until 31. 1. of the present academic year.
Exam: Written exam that is complemented with oral exam if necessary. Credits are required prior final exam.
Grade: Accordingly to points scored on credits and exam. See course's page for details.

Content
|
1. Basic structure and architecture of computer networks.
2. Internet vs. ethernet - explanation of concepts and main differences.
3. Computer networks - standardization of computer networks, types of computer networks, TCP/IP stack, ISO/OSI model and selected protocols.
4. IP, DNS - issues of identification of clients, servers and other active computer elements within computer networks.
5. WEB - introduction to the history, development and structure of today's World Wide Web, HTTP standards, HTML 5.
6. Peer-2-peer networks. Anonymity.
7. Routing in computer networks with respect to the state of the network or the structure of the computer network.
8. Email - protocols used in electronic mail (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, LDAP), electronic signature, security issues and attacks on electronic mail - eg man in the middle and phishing.
9-10. Overview of operating systems, differences, characteristics, basic navigation and usage. Linux.
11. VPN - remote access to the corporate network via a secure tunnel.
12. File systems - introduction of various file systems, their advantages and disadvantages and the possibility of their use in practice. File and printer sharing.
13. Security and encryption - introduction and summary of the main security principles, examples of phishing, scam and attacks on payment terminals or ATMs.
